At Bio-D, they’re committed to making cleaning products that don’t cost the earth, and to helping consumers contribute to a healthier, more sustainable planet. We only use ingredients that are naturally derived or plant-based.

In the 1980s, the company founder Michael Barwell’s job was to help maintain and clean commercial ships. Michael made the horrifying discovery that many of the ingredients in the industrial cleaning products he worked with – which required the use of heavy-duty safety equipment, such as a respirator – were the very same ingredients that were also in everyday household cleaning products. Concerned about this discovery, Michael developed effective cleaning products that wouldn’t harm the environment, nor the people using them.

Michael has since retired, and Lloyd Atkin (MD) has worked with the company since 1996. Lloyd has been instrumental in developing the current range of Bio-D products and is carrying on Michael’s legacy.  You can find out more about the history of Bio-D and everything we’ve achieved over the past 30 years in our celebration video.

Bio-D really care about what goes into their products, which is why they only use naturally sourced ingredients. With vegan friendly products that are gentle on sensitive skin, they are endorsed by Cruelty Free InternationalThe Vegan Society and Allergy UK.

With all packaging being 100% recyclable, they have introduced containers made from used plastic bottles that may otherwise have gone to landfill – with over 75% of bottled packaging now created from recycled materials.

They are also ISO 14001 registered, which means they put environmental management at the heart of operations to achieve sustainable success.

In addition to this, Bio-D are one of the only green cleaning companies whose products meet the standards for commercial food preparation also known as BSEN1276.
